Police taped off a wide area around Ashton Memorial Gardens this morning after the body of a man was discovered in the park.

Police say they were called to the Memorial Gardens off Crickets Lane at around 7am after the body had been discovered by a member of the public.

A large area near the junction of Stamford Street, Crickets Lane and Mossley Road at the BT roundabout was immediately sealed off as officers investigate if the death is suspicious.

Police taped off the entire memorial gardens and closed Crickets Lane.

Their inquiries at the scene are ongoing.

Tameside Council Highways has also urged motorists to avoid the area, stating Stamford Street central had been closed and most of the BT Exchange roundabout cordoned off.

Police have sealed off the memorial park after the grim discovery.

Tameside Highways is appealing to motorists to avoid the area.
