Excitement is steadily building ahead of the Tony Downes Memorial Trophy on Saturday.

Taking place at the Butchers Arms Stadium, the clash will be contested between Droylsden and Ashton United.

The annual fixture takes place to honour the memory of former Guardsman Neil ‘Tony’ Downes, who was tragically killed in a landmine blast while serving in Afghanistan in 2007.

The two sides were forced to share the trophy last year after a six-goal thriller, in which Ashton scored two late goals through Liam Tomsett and Aaron Chalmers to salvage a 3-3 draw.

Droylsden are preparing for a new season in the Evo-Stik West alongside Mossley and Glossop North End, while Ashton open their account in the National League North with a home clash against Nuneaton Borough on Saturday, August 4.
