A man is in a critical condition in hospital after being shot in Ashton this afternoon.

The shooting happened at around 4.45pm on Birch Street, which is currently closed off with armed police at the scene.

Eye witnesses have said they saw a car pull up on the street, with someone inside fired five shots before the car sped off. The victim was treated in an ambulance at the scene for around 15 minutes before being driven to hospital.

GMP Superintendent Mark Dexter said: “I understand that this will cause concern in the local community but I want to reassure the public that we currently have a large police presence in the area, including armed officers that were deployed at the scene. If you have any information, it is incredibly important that you get in touch as soon as possible.”
