Three firefighters suffered minor burns as they battled moorland fires at Dovestone Reservoir yesterday.

Jon Aspinall, GMFRS’ Area Manager for Oldham, Bury and Rochdale, said: “Three firefighters suffered very minor burns after fighting a complex fire in very challenging circumstances.

“They were treated by colleagues at the scene and did not require any further treatment.

“Crews did a fantastic job in difficult conditions on the hottest day of the year so far.

“I would urge people visiting areas of countryside and moorland to help prevent these kind of fires by making sure you always extinguish cigarettes properly; you take your rubbish away with you – particularly glass bottles that can reflect sunlight and start fires; and if using disposable barbecues you use them safely, never leave them attended and ensure they are fully extinguished and removed from the area before you leave.

“Crews from Stalybridge and Mossley fire stations alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police will be providing safety advice about wildfires and general countryside safety to the public over the weekend.”

Reports of the fire were first received at around 2.40pm at the reservoir at Bank Lane, Greenfield, yesterday, following a previous fire on moorland in the area only a day previously.

Six fire engines from Bury, Hollins, Chadderton, Mossley, Marple and Heywood along with three wildfire units attended the scene with two helicopters from Oldham Mountain Rescue also assisting firefighters.

They used forced air firefighting units and other specialist equipment to extinguish the fire which covered an 800 sq metre area.

Visitors were told to stay away from Bank Lane while local residents were urged to keep windows and doors shut.

Although the fire service reports the fire is now under control their teams will be at Dovestone this weekend to provide safety advice about protecting the habitat.

Investigations into how the fire began are underway.
