Stalybridge Celtic 2-0 Stafford Rangers

A brace from Connor Hughes gave Celtic a vital win at a chilly Bower Fold, on Tuesday night. With arctic conditions all day, groundsman Pete Owens must be commended for what was a great playing surface. An even first half saw both sides miss guilt edged chances. Firstly Westwood of Stafford put an effort wide when he was only yards out and really should have scored. Then Dickinson did the same at the other end.

Celtic took the initiative in the second half and really pushed on. Hughes who has impressed since joining Celtic really shone. Just before the hour mark Bailey-Jones fed Hughes who after a ricochet found himself one on one with Whitehouse. The tricky winger finished superbly into the far corner. Then five minutes later Celtic sealed the win and it was Hughes again. Roberts broke free down the left flank and delivered a delicious low cross to the far post where Hughes was on hand to tap home. Stafford threw what they had at Celtic to get back into the game but Celtic’s defence was well marshaled and they claimed three huge points in their battle to beat the drop.
