Four men have been jailed after brutally attacking a man for disposing of dog waste in their bin.

The four men jailed for attack

They were sentenced today (Wednesday 7 February) at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.

The four men, all from Ashton-Under-Lyne, were found guilty in December of 2017.

Paul Hands, 38, of Holebottom has been jailed for 13 years for causing grievous bodily harm with intent, Darren Barnfather, 51, of Holebottom has been jailed for 11 years for causing grievous bodily harm with intent . John McCarthy, 52, of Holebottom and Darren Bagnall, 51, of Hindley Close have each been jailed for two and a half years for grievous bodily harm with unlawful wounding.

The attack took place on 6 July 2016 when a man was walking his dog along Holebottom in Ashton. The man threw away a bag of dog waste into a bin outside of a property where Paul Hands was staying. Hands became angry at the action and began to threaten and shout abuse at him.

The victim walked away but the next day when walking his dog was spotted by the group of men who then armed themselves with an arsenal of weapons including a golf club, a pool cue and electrical wire.

They proceeded to surround him and attack him on a footpath, striking him in the head. He sustained serious injuries including a fractured skull, serious bleeding to the brain and a fractured collar bone.

The group also attacked the dog –  John McCarthy was seen swinging it around by its lead at shoulder height before Barnfather smashed a piece of wood over its back.

The victim managed to make his way home before collapsing and had to be rushed to Salford Royal Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. The dog also survived the attack.

Detective Constable Simon Cropper from GMP’s Tameside Borough said: “This was a vicious and brutal attack over such a trivial matter.

“Paul Hands was verbally abusive towards his victim when the incident first happened then planned and carried out a brutal attack on the victim with the help of his friends.

“They left their victim with life-changing injuries and attacked his defenceless dog. They are fully deserving of their sentences.

“I hope the victim feels he has justice and I would like to commend him for his bravery.”
