Heyside picked up their first victory of 2018 with a 2-0 win over Royton Town at Crompton House Academy on Saturday.

Victory, which came courtesy of goals from Adam Dale and Mark Hopwood, has sent Heyside to fourth in the table on 33 points.

Following the game, manager Matthew Wheelton offered his thoughts and said: “It was a good win on Saturday, especially considering we hadn’t played for almost a month.

“Royton have strengthened their squad significantly so it was a good three points, made sweeter by keeping a clean sheet.”

Reflecting on 2017 as a whole, Matthew added: “It was great to get promoted into the Premier League – it was the fruits of years of hard work from the committee and previous manager Geoff Howard.

“Our maiden season in the Prem has gone relatively well. We are at the right end of the table, reached the semi finals of the County Cup and now have a settled squad of lads who try to do things the right way and are a credit to the club.”

While the league has been the priority this season, Matthew is also hoping his side can reach the final of the Gilgryst Cup. However, a tough encounter in the quarter final against Wythenshawe Town waits. He said: “It will be a tough game against Wythenshawe, no doubt about it.

“We’ve had two cracking games against them so far. Both teams move the ball well so it should be a good advert for the league.

“I’m confident we have enough to win through to the next round.”
