It was a poor weekend for Droylsden CC’s first team as they suffered a disappointing defeat on Saturday to move them down to fourth in Division 2. Before that, on Friday evening, Droylsden Bears were condemned to a last ball T20 defeat to Dukinfield making progressing to the next round a very tough task.

Captain Aaqib Uppal won the toss on Saturday in a top of the table clash against Brooksbottom. In-form Alex Cicchirillo fell early for 2 before Smith too fell t reducing DCC to 28-2. It was slow going for as Greg Shirley got into the teens before being run out making it 52-3 in the 20th over. A 55 run partnership between Uppal (43) and Mike Schofield (18) put the visitors in a strong position at 107-3 in the 42nd over. There was then a huge collapse to 123 all out in the final over of the innings as the final five Droylsden batsmen made just six runs between them.

Early wickets would be key if Droylsden were to continue their winning run and when Brooksbottom were 33-3 with Harron Cheema, Nathan Nistico and Uppal taking a wicket each, the game looked wide open. However, all rounder Iqbal and McCarthy took the game away from DCC with a 62 run partnership. Brooksbottom eventually chased down the total of 124 down in 33 overs for the loss of six wickets as Jones took two late wickets and Schofield one. The loss moved Droylsden down to fourth in Division 2 after 12 games.

Droylsden Bears play their second T20 game of the year against Denton West on Tuesday night at home before facing Denton St Lawrence on Friday night to finish the group stages of the T20. Then on Saturday, the firsts host eleventh placed Wythenshawe while the seconds travel to Denton. On Sunday, the 3rd XI face Springhead 2nd XI away from home.
