The Rotary Club of Hyde celebrated its 80th Charter Anniversary night in style with the official  congratulations heralded in by none other than the Town Crier of Chester.

Rotarians and their guests enjoyed a three course dinner at Oaklands Hall in Hyde on Friday evening.

Special guests included the Mayor of Tameside Cllr Philip Fitzpatrick who congratulated the club on reaching the magnificent landmark and also hailed the wonderful charity work the club undertakes locally, while acknowledging the good work Rotary accomplishes globally, not least in the near eradication of polio.

District Governor Rotarian Stan Bowes had the honour of wishing the club a happy birthday and helping Hyde Rotary President Kevin Maddox cut a specially made birthday cake – together with the Mayor.

He also presented Kevin with an 80th charter certificate.

But it was guest speaker David Mitchel, town crier to the historic city of Chester, who hailed in the birthday celebrations in true town crier style, ringing in the club’s 80th year much to the enjoyment of gathered guests.

He then shared many tales of the perils of his job but added it was time Hyde should once again have a town crier of its own.

Kevin thanked everyone for making his time as president a memorable year so far and raised a glass to another 80 years of Rotary in Hyde.

It is Kevin’s second term as president of the club.

“I am so proud to be president in this our 80th year, it was my pleasure to welcome all our guests and friends this evening and the guest speaker, The Chester Town Crier David Mitchell, certainly kept everybody entertained,” he said.

“I raise my glass for another 80 successful years for the Rotary Club here in Hyde.”

There was even a spot of Irish dancing by a talented young group of siblings who performed for guests to mark St Patrick’s Day.
