Five fire crews battled for several hours to bring this fire at a construction site under control. Houses near by in Pottery lane were evacuated due to the intense heat.

Fire fighters from across Tameside and East Manchester tackled a huge fire at a block of flats still under construction on Hyde Road in Gorton. last night.

The blaze caused traffic chaos in the area with Hyde Road and Pottery Lane closed to traffic and many houses close by had to be evacuated due to the intensity of the heat generated by the fire.

Fire crews were called out around 8:05 pm on Sunday evening to the site, which is part of a massive housing regeneration project through the East Manchester corridor.

On arrival crews found that the timber frame of the seven storey block of flats had caught fire and the building was already well alight.

Incident Commander Ben Levy said: “At around five past eight this evening we received a large number of call, in excess of forty.  Given the fact it’s (the building) timber framed and open to the elements the fire spread quite quickly.”

It took fire crews several hours to bring the blaze under control and crews remained at the scene through the morning hours to  damp down  the embers and ensure against re-ignition

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
