Four girls from Active Tameside Gymnastics enjoyed the competition of a lifetime representing the UK in the USAIGC World Championships in Orlando, Florida.

Erin Worthington, Ellie Jay Woodside, Annabelle Lees and Libby Roebuck travelled over to Florida to represent the UK after qualifying for the competition last October in the UK Gymnastics Annual Championships.

Competing on all four pieces of apparatus – asymmetric bars, vault, beam and floor – the girls and their coaches put in the hours and the hard work to impress the judges stateside with Libby earning the title USAIGC World Champion, Bronze Level.

The competition hosted 1500 gymnasts from the UK, USA, South Africa, Canada and Bermuda.

The international stage didn’t faze the girls who all put in great performances.

Coach Alan Hobson said “I am so proud of all four girls who helped and supported each other throughout the whole competition.

“They trained hard for this event and it’s been an amazing experience, one they’ll never forget.”

“The award ceremonies were a particular highlight. In 20 years of coaching I cannot remember an award ceremony full of such excitement and jubilation as Libby led the medal winners out on to the podium to receive their medals. It was an emotional moment with even Libby in tears.”

Back in training at Active Tameside Gymnastics at Active Ken Ward the girls have gained a great amount of confidence and inspiration as a result of the competition.

Something which has been noticed by the other gymnasts they train alongside who are inspired by the achievement of their peers.

Not only did the girls work hard in training, their efforts to raise funds for the trip were just as impressive, completing a full day of bag packing in ASDA’s Hyde store.

The girls’ parents were also in on the fundraising action, organising a Comedy Night and Auction at Hyde United Football Club, with fantastic prizes donated including an England Rugby shirt signed by the squad.

Local sponsors were also hugely generous in their support and include Tameside Council, CPF Installations Dukinfield, Bardsley Fold Farm Cattery, Heaton Upholstery, Freight First and Global Surveys.
