Angela Rayner has accepted a position as Women and Equalities portfolio within the Labour Party’s Shadow Cabinet.

The MP for Ashton-under-Lyne, Droylsden and Failsworth was asked to fulfil the role by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who conducted a reshuffle on Monday amid a number of resignations in the wake of the EU Referendum result.

Mrs Rayner takes over as Women and Equalities minister from Stretford and Urmston MP, Kate Green, and has pledged to be a strong champion for women.

Angela said: “I have been asked to serve the Labour Party in this vital role in the Shadow Cabinet and I am honoured to accept.

“Women make up more than half of our population and need a strong champion to fight for them especially in these turbulent times. I make that pledge and will get on with that job, whatever the events in Westminster and elsewhere.

“I also hope to do all I can to ensure Britain remains a tolerant, inclusive, fair country where each person is afforded equal treatment.”

She has previously served in the Shadow Cabinet as Work and Pensions minister but has been given this new role following an exodus of fellow MPs after Hilary Benn’s sacking – with 19 resignations so far.
