Dr Richard Bircher

Dr Richard Bircher, a GP at Lockside Medical Practice in Stalybridge, is embarking on a 100 mile sponsored bike ride on Saturday from Stockport Viaduct to the Menai Suspension Bridge, all to raise money to build a school in Uganda.
Richard, who is also a Governing Body Member and the Clinical Lead for Long-Term Conditions at NHS Tameside and Glossop CCG, is aiming to raise £20,000 through a number of sponsored events which have also included his guitar playing and stand-up skills at comedy evenings.  So far he is a third of the way to his target.
Richard said: “A good education is essential to help people find employment and raise the level of health and community welfare in the area.  The school is in a part of the world where poverty is the norm and children have very little opportunity. Teachers look after 180 children aged 11 and younger but work with no equipment or books.
“We want to give the teachers  classrooms and the basic text books to help children complete their primary education.”

Helping Uganda Schools started in 1995 with the aim of helping to pay for the education of 15 children who lived in a very rural area of Uganda.
