EXPERIENCED defender Kelvin Lugsden has announced he will leave Glossop North End this summer after nine years at the club.

The long-serving centre-back first arrived at Surrey Street in 2007 and scored 15 goals in 420 outings for the Hillmen.

Lugsden was voted both Players’ and Management Player of the Year in 2014-15, after helping Glossop secure a league and cup double as well as reach their second FA Vase Final at Wembley.

He appeared 28 times in all competitions last season in North End’s first season in the Evo-Stik First Division North, with his final appearance for the club coming in the 2-1 defeat by Northwich Victoria in the play-off semi-finals on April 27.

But the 28-year-old has now revealed his intention to pursue a new challenge in his football career ahead of the 2016-17 campaign.

Kelvin said in a statement on the club’s message board: “It is with a heavy heart that I am sadly moving on from Glossop North End.

“I want to thank the club that has become like a home to me and treated me and my family so well over the years, I will take great memories with me and will cherish them for as long as I live.

“When I came to Glossop I was playing in front of 100 plus fans and have seen the gates swell to 400 which just shows what truly great fans you have at the football club the loyalty and consistency from them has been amazing and I thank you for turning out week in week out to show your support.

“I have met some amazing people at the club and have some great friends.”

The former New Mills defender often stepped in as captain for Glossop and played in both FA Vase Final defeats at the national stadium, against Whitley Bay in 2009 and North Shields in 2015.

Lugsden is one of a number of first-team players to leave the club this summer, including captain Dave Young – who spoke to Chronicle Sport last week – as boss Chris Willcock looks to reshape his squad.

Kelvin’s brother Kieran also plays as a forward for GNE, who finished fourth in their first season since gaining promotion as champions of the North West Counties League Premier Division.

The news follows confirmation on Sunday that midfielder Eddie Moran will leave after three seasons at Surrey Street, while Tom Bailey and Matt Russell have also departed the club.
