Russell Scott Primary School has announced on Facebook it is to close until further notice as the school building is unsafe.

Headteacher Stephen Marsland released the following statement on the school’s Facebook page:

“The Governors of Russell Scott have taken the serious but informed decision to close the school until further notice. The Governors and Headteacher have commissioned independent advice from Architects, Mechanical and Electrical specialists, Access Consultant, Court Expert Witness and Insurance Risk Control Consultant all of whom in their professional judgement believe that children and staff safety are compromised.

“Unfortunately the process of putting right urgent considerations has not been undertaken whilst more serious concerns have been brought to light in the last 24 hours. The architect’s assessment and report and that of all other independent professionals reflects that the building has been left with a significant amount of patent defects and does not comply with regulations, whilst the Fire Strategy is compromised and is in need of urgent rectification. It is their recommendation that immediate action is taken to redress these outstanding defects as a matter of urgency by the contractor responsible for the work.

“This very difficult decision taken by the Governors to close the school reflects the very serious nature of the concerns they are dealing with and the overriding objective of keeping your children safe.

“We have been assured that all works needed to make the school compliant will be undertaken as a matter of urgency.
You will be kept fully informed with developments through the website, Facebook and via Parent Mail. The Governors will ensure that the school is fully compliant before reopening.

“Again the Governors can only apologise for this serious closure but it is done in the best interests of your children and their safety.”
