New Year 1966 started with a change to the rota system for calling out Glossopdale doctors at evenings and weekends.

It was being replaced by what was called an ‘emergency system’ and people were not exactly pleased.

Anyone needing a doctor during those times still had to phone their own GP.

But the calls would be intercepted by an operator at the telephone exchange who would transfer them to the doctor on duty.

Local people were not happy, saying they wanted to be seen by their ‘own doctor’.

Not a GP they didn’t know who would not know their medical history.
