Ashton MP Angela Rayner answered her critics this week after coming under (laser) fire in a Star Wars shoe storm.
The town’s first female MP, elected in May with a 10,000 plus majority, hit the national press headlines after apparently failing to land a pair of limited R2D2 heels she believed she had pre-ordered from a shoe shop in Brighton.
She complained to the shop about poor customer service, believing she had safely secured the £195 novelty shoes, which quickly sold out.
She pointed out she had been a customer for four years and had waited months on the list for the shoes.
“I have only ever brought your shoes and I am loath to do so again, or recommend your shoes to others,” she penned.
But the complaint – and the fact it was on letter headed House of Commons paper – saw her ‘Darth Maul’-ed by critics.
Not one to ‘Luke Skywalker’ away from an opportunity, local Tameside Tory leader Cllr John Bell took to Twitter to lamb-blast the MP, repeatedly retweeting the national headlines.
In a statement Angela said the incident had been due to a ‘regrettable’ breakdown in communication with the shoe shop staff.
“My complaint was about the poor level of customer service and the attitude of a member of staff, who appears to be seeking headlines in tabloid newspapers rather than concentrating on providing a decent service to customers,” she said.
Despite claims to the contrary, her office pointed out it was in fact permissible for ‘modest’ use of House of Commons stationery in some personal circumstances.
