Theatre Royal Onward is celebrating an opportunity to buy Hyde Theatre Royal.

The charity, first set up to save the theatre 15 years ago, says the Edwardian architecture must be preserved and say once purchased then the building can bring economic growth and community benefits to Hyde.

The aim is to use the venue for theatrical productions and film shows but also to host weddings, conferences, dance shows, dinner dances, live music, commercial business launches, art exhibitions and many other commercial and community events.

The current owner has carried out a lot of the essential work needed on the theatre, the roof has been repaired, the rot has been removed, the windows have been replaced and the ‘Screen 2’ cinema has been dismantled from the stage area.

But the challenge is just beginning for Theatre Royal Onward which is now asking the whole of Tameside to rally round and raise the £250,000 needed to actually buy the theatre.

“We now need all the people of Hyde, Tameside and the North West and yes, the country to join us in preserving, restoring and reopening this important theatre,” explained John Gray from Theatre Royal Onward.

“There are very few examples of Edwardian theatres in the country in this condition. It is a gem of a building and is right here in the middle of our town.”
