Actors Christopher Eccleston and Maxine Peake led tributes at the weekend as hundreds gathered in Manchester to remember the victims of the Peterloo Massacre.

On August 16, 1819. in St Peter’s Fields, Manchester, armed cavalry charged a crowd of around 60,000 people who had gathered to listen to anti-poverty and pro-democracy speakers.

It is estimated that 18 were killed, and more than 700 seriously injured.

Campaigners want a fitting memorial to ‘the martyrs of democracy’ to be established at the site where the atrocities happened 196 years ago.

On Sunday there were banners, marchers arriving from boroughs all over Greater Manchester – including Tameside.
