Police have made an arrest after a man tried to snatch a toddler in Hyde.

A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of child abduction and remains in police custody for questioning.

On Monday afternoon, a mother and her two-year-old daughter were walking down Market Street and were approached by a man, who crouched down in front of the little girl and started talking to them both.

He then picked the child up and began walking off quickly with her towards the market.

The mother said she was terrified as she ran to grab her little girl from him.

The man then walked away in the direction of Market Place.

Detective Chief Inspector John Mazzolai based at Hyde police station said: “At this stage we are investigating the one incident, which occurred on Market Street, Hyde at 2.20pm on Monday 11 May 2015.

“I am also aware of reports of a potential further incident the previous Friday.

“If such an incident did occur it has not been reported to police, however is clearly of grave concern and I would encourage anyone with information about that or any other potential incident to call us.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at Hyde police station on 0161 856 9484 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
