Tameside’s first diversity festival is underway this week in conjunction with National Hate Crime Awareness Week.

Portland Basin Museum in Ashton will be holding cultural storytelling tomorrow (Sat) and the Bennett Street Youth Centre are hosting a free family fun event tomorrow afternoon (sat) with information stalls and performances to help celebrate the different communities that make up Tameside.

Executive Member for Health and Neighbourhoods, Cllr Lynn Travis, said: “ We are encouraging all local groups to get involved by doing whatever they can during the week to celebrate diversity and bring different groups of people together.

“Hate Crime Awareness week provides a great opportunity for us to focus on diversity but our efforts to tackle discrimination are endless. A lot of people in Tameside suffer discrimination every day of their lives and we are using a ‘Walk in my Shoes’ message as a way of getting people thinking and showing their support.”
