Weddings forced to move as chapel faces roof repairs

Worshippers at the Old Chapel Dukinfield have had to relocate after the building was listed as “unsafe to use” following a property survey.

Extensive dry rot above the ceiling and walls have forced the congregation to relocate to the school hall with the church now unable to perform wedding ceremonies and baptisms inside the beautiful Victorian building.

Services are currently being held in the school hall where they will continue until the problem can be fixed.

Chapel Warden Jennifer Moody hopes however the dilemma will ‘bring people together’.

Alternative venues for couples planning to us the chapel for weddings this year have been arranged.

The chapel correspondence secretary, Dawn Buckle said: “Jennifer Moody and Pat Shaw have had the difficult task of telling the upcoming wedding couples the chapel is not available for use, a challenging task under any circumstances.”

The total cost of the repairs is not yet known.
