Even the horizontal rain could not dampen spirits at Mottram Show

Mottram Show organisers took one look at the weather forecast for Sunday and knew they were in for a bad day.

The experts prophesied sunshine and showers and that’s just what the Old Hall Showground got.

Although some of the rain that swept down from the hills was more than just a shower.

Show president Malcolm Lewis said: “I was walking across the field with the Mayor when the wind got up and the rain was horizontal.”

The unsettled weather meant hundreds less visitors for the show.

“It’s a pity we did not get the weather of a few weeks ago,” said Malcolm.

“The weather definitely took its toll on the number of people who came, but we can’t control the weather.”

Hard work by a small band of enthusiasts had come up with one of the region’s top country shows.

With the ground in great condition right up to show day, there had never been any early thoughts of calling it off.

And that resulted in livestock, traders and entertainers from a wide area, arriving at almost first light.
