Simply Red – Fairground

Denton lad Mick Hucknall graces our screens once again in Simply Red smash-hit Fairground. Simply Red, with an ex-band-member list longer than my arm, started life in a 1976 Sex Pistols gig in the Lesser Free Trade Hall on Peter Street in Manchester. The Frantic Elevators, as they were then, lasted only 7 years with limited releases. When that ended in ’85, Mick and his manager assembled a group of session players and started attracting record companies. The group was nicknamed ‘Red’ after Mick’s nickname – deriving from his ginger hair – and the ‘Simply’ bit came about when a venue manager was confused about the name of the band and Mick replied ‘Red, simply…Red.’, the name got printed on posters and it stuck.
