A blaze at a Hyde town centre flat brought the town’s busiest road to a close.

Crews from Ashton, Stalybridge and Hyde were called to the two-storey premises above a dry cleaners on Market Street at 6.30pm last Thursday.

In total six firefighters tackled the flames which sent plumes of dark billowing smoke high over the town.

The firefighters had to wear breathing apparatus and used two hose reels to extinguish the flames.

One of the first people alerted to the fire was Faisal ‘Faz’ Din, of Hollingworth, who was working in the building next door to the fire at Lloyds Pharmacy at the time.

The 32-year-old pharmacist immediately helped to evacuate people nearby.

“The dry cleaners below were shut so I had to advise the fire services that access to the flats was from behind the shop, and not the front,” he said.

“Anyone who was close by I tried to evacuate from the area because the glass from the flat was breaking dangerously.”

Faisal assisted the first crew at the scene by helping them run hose pipes through the pharmacy until other crews arrived.

“As soon as I saw the fire it was already a huge blaze, but the fire services arrived quickly,” he said.

Nobody was injured in the blaze but Greater Manchester Police have launched an investigation as they believe the cause, which is not yet known, may have been deliberate. No arrests have been made and the police investigation was continuing as we went to press.

Dramatic footage of the fire was captured on camera as the fire crews arrived. You can view that footage at www.http://www.tamesidereporter.com/reporter/?p=1628
