Top nomination for Reuben’s Mum
Thursday 7th November 2013 @ 15:51 by Mark Phillip

A Mottram mother whose Reuben’s Retreat charity has raised more than £500,000 is in line to be named Tesco Mum of the Year.
Nicola Graham, 42, has been short listed from 6,000 applicants  for the prestigious award.
Now she’s crossing her fingers until March when the overall winner will be announced at London’s swish Savoy Hotel.
Nicola was chosen as a finalist  in recognition of her work for charity, since the death of her son Reuben at just 23 months.
It came  in the summer of 2012,  from a rare and malignant brain tumour, and almost immediately Nicola’s charity work began.
Referring to others shortlisted, she said: “I am thrilled and humbled to be among such incredible company.”
Reuben had  a fall on a family holiday in Devon last August and as he did not seem to be recovering,  the family took him to hospital where he was diagnosed with the tumour and died just seven days later.
Even as he was dying on life-support,  Nicola decided to spend her life creating Reuben’s Retreat – a house where families with terminally ill children could go to ‘relax, remember, recharge and rebuild’.
The aim is to raise £2m to develop Reuben’s Retreat, in just 23 months, reflecting her son’s life span.
Reuben’s Retreat will be based in the North West and will offer free support to families with either terminally ill or life-threatened children.
Once the charity was launched, support and money came flooding in from people  touched by the tragedy.
A tireless supporter of families who have similar experiences, she has 29,000 followers on Facebook where she posts almost daily.
All shortlisted mums will be considered by the panel, which includes DJ Sara Cox, TV personality Gaby Logan and sports presenter Denise Lewis.
If Nicola is selected by the judges to be one of the winning mums, she will be treated to a full makeover and her own Tesco Living magazine photo shoot, before being presented with her award in front of friends, family and celebrity guests.
Debbie Chernin, Tesco Mum of the Year project manager, said: “We are extremely proud to be holding the Tesco Mum of the Year Awards for the ninth year.
“We have heard many truly incredible stories and it’s been a privilege to recognise these inspirational women.
“Everyone shortlisted has achieved something outstanding and shown selfless devotion to others. Our aim is to show every single mum just how amazing she 1391480_10151675129131594_574765057_nis.”
