Pint-sized politician Cindy Parkes McNally got her first taste of civic duty when the seven-year-old became mayor for the day.

The Denton West End Primary pupil was chosen by her classmates to wear junior mayoral robes and chains of office to host an assembly with her real-life counterpart, Tameside Mayor Cllr Joe Kitchen.

The session aimed to bring to life local democracy for youngsters and link in with the Citizenship part of the curriculum.

Cllr Kitchen, who is planning visits to a number of Tameside schools, said: “This is a fun way of engaging children’s interest in local democracy and getting them to think about what it means and how they can make a positive difference to their community and local decision making.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to meet so many young people and give them an insight into my role as mayor.”DSCF7693
