Youngsters stride towards excellent results
Monday 11th March 2019 @ 11:40 by Mark Phillip

Two junior East Cheshire runners are heading for the top after a series of excellent results in cross country running this winter.

In their latest big race on Saturday 9th March, Luke Carrington aged 12 from Gee Cross and James McGraw, aged 13, from Glossop represented Greater Manchester at the Intercounties Cross Country Championships at Loughborough in Leicestershire.

Both Luke (68th place) and James (113th place) were in the first four finishers for Greater Manchester earning the county a 15th place finish against the best young runners from all other English and Welsh counties.

This great performance in the orange and black vest of Greater Manchester was the latest big race success in under 13 boys’ races for Luke, a pupil at Marple High, and James, a pupil at Oldham Blue Coat School.

Other performances this year include both boys finishing in the top 20 at the recent Northern Championships at Pontefract Racecourse and both finishing in the top 100 at the National Cross Country Championships held at Harewood House in Leeds.

And along with East Cheshire teammate James Harney, they have won a team bronze medal at the Northern Cross Country Relays held in Sheffield, a silver at the Greater Manchester Cross Country Championships and a team silver in the competitive Manchester League Cross Country League.

Coach Shirley Steward said: “The boys have had a great cross country season and it was topped off in style when they ran so well in the Greater Manchester orange and black vest at the Intercounties on Saturday.

“The whole season has been a big success story and it is great that the hard work our young athletes put in reaps the rewards of medals and recognition.

“This is no overnight success – there have been lots of hard but fun training sessions at East Cheshire’s Richmond Street track and at Daisy Nook Country park through the cold winter months.”

The East Cheshire team is now looking forward to a couple of weeks well earned rest before they start training for the summer track and field season and for Luke triathlon events which he also excels in.
