A devoted couple from Ashton celebrated an amazing sixty years of marriage last week.

Hadrian and Patricia Coles were married on February 21 1959 at Christ Church in Ashton. It was a wet and windy day, “but it wasn’t raining in my heart,” Patricia fondly recalled.

The pair had met at the Palais de Danse in Ashton two years earlier, where Patricia just loved to dance, especially the jive. She and her soon-to-be husband were big fans of Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe.

Hadrian began his working life making handbags before doing his national service at the Ladysmith Barracks on Mossley Road. Later, he worked at WCB- now the Stamford Group- working alongside his eldest son Garry for a time.

In his spare time, Hadrian loved to play football, turning out for Hurst Amateurs and the Halfway House pub. Sport-mad Adrian has also been a member at Ashton Cricket Club for decades and also loves a spot of gardening.

Patricia, or Pat as she is known, had many jobs throughout the years but the main one, and her favourite, was raising the couple’s four children; Garry, Darren, Beverley and Craig.

The family enjoyed annual summer holidays down to Brixham in Devon and when Pat wasn’t jiving, she was on one of her regular trips to Blackpool thanks to her grandfather, a stationmaster who could get her free travel!

Her family say she always organised a lovely Christmas and that her cheese and onion pies are the best in the world! The secret family recipe has been handed down to Beverley.

Hadrian and Pat lived in Ashton all their lives before retiring to Filey near Scarborough.

The couple moved back to Tameside in 2013. Pat now lives at The Lakes Care Centre in Dukinfield, where the diamond couple celebrated their 60th anniversary last week, surrounded by their loving and supportive family.
