It was the end of an era on Droylsden last Thursday as the town’s branch of RBS closed its doors for the final time.

It was announced back in September that the branch would be one of 54 to close nationally, with almost 260 job losses.

An RBS spokesperson said at the time: “As we are no longer launching Williams & Glyn as a challenger bank we now have two branch networks operating in close proximity to each other in England and Wales – NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland.

“As a result we have reviewed our overall branch footprint in England and Wales and have made the difficult decision to close 54 Royal Bank of Scotland branches. Customers of Royal Bank of Scotland in England and Wales will be able to use NatWest branches and local post offices for their everyday banking needs.

RBS branches in Ashton, Denton, Hyde, Gorton, Oldham and Stockport also closed in 2018.

The Droylsden branch was targeted by an armed robber on New Year’s Eve. Thankfully, nobody was hurt and a 28-year-old man was arrested shortly afterwards.

It was a particularly poignant day for Saltsman & Co Estate Agents on Market Street. The company’s founder, Cyril Saltsman, was the first account holder at the Droylsden branch of RBS, all the way back in 1934.

Since then, both Saltsman & Co Estate Agents and the Royal Bank of Scotland have remained an active part of the community.

Director Michael Saltsman said: “The RBS is the final bank to close its doors in Droylsden and Tameside as a whole has seen the closure of many banks in recent years. The Droylsden community and many local businesses were left feeling saddened that the last remaining bank in Droylsden has chosen to withdraw from the community, which no longer provides them with the access to banking services that the community deserves.

“Michael Saltsman (3rd Generation) and all staff at Saltsman & Co Estate Agents would like to thank all of the staff past and present from the RBS for their continued service to the community over the years.”
