East Cheshire Harrier Martin McGann, a Life Member, will join his club-mates in the next English National Cross-country Championship race at Harewood House near Leeds on Saturday 23rd February.

It will be the 50th consecutive occasion that he has completed this, the premier event of the winter season. There will be little reward for finishing the seven muddy miles; Martin though may have the satisfaction of setting a record that is probably untouchable.

He said: “I’m not really in good fettle going into this one with a knee problem that has persisted over the last 12 months, but with sheer willpower I’m determined to get round and rejoice on my fulfilment of this magical figure of 50 consecutive National finishes at the age of 72, a record that will be very hard to equal or beat in my life-time. The National to me has always been the Olympics of the cross-country season, the pinnacle. It’s a spectacular event to be part of and an experience no true cross-country runner should miss.”
