Gainsborough Trinity 1-0 Stalybridge Celtic

A solitary Ashley Worsfold goal denied Celtic what would have been a more than deserved point from their trip to Lincolnshire on Saturday afternoon.

After some indifferent form in 2019 Celtic looked to get back on track against manager-less Trinity, and until the 81st minute looked good value. With a tactical switch in formation Celtic looked more robust defensively, but perhaps at the cost of some of their attack intent.

Ross Dent came the closest in the opening half for Celtic with a good header which was directed narrowly wide of the goal. With manager Lee Sinnott sacked in the week of the game the hosts looked happy to tread water and ride the game out. Celtic gave all they could in the second half to break the home side down.

Nyaupembe twice went close, whilst Dent saw a second headed chance fail to break to deadlock. Before Tongue hit a rasping free kick that Stewart had to save well from. Solomom-Davies was causing havoc down the Celtic right and came close to assisting a goal on several occasions.  Celtic were left to rue not scoring though when against the run of play Worsfold arrived to meet a dead cross the beat Paddy Wharton and put the hosts in front. This knocked the stuffing out of Celtic who didn’t recover. Trinity hussled Celtic out of any chance of a leveller and picked up all three points.
