Fire crews extinguish large moorland blaze above Stalybridge
Sunday 17th February 2019 @ 22:48 by Tom Greggan

Fire crews have extinguished a large moorland that broke out near Millbrook this evening.

Crews were called to Brushes Road just after 9pm this evening after emergency services were inundated with calls.

As images and videos flooded social media, the local community were no doubt reminded of the devastating fire that scorched the moorland last summer.

But Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service sent five crews, who used specialist equipment to extinguish the fire, which grew to 100m squared, in around two hours.

In a statement at 11.155pm, GMFRS said: “Firefighters are making every effort to bring the fire on the moors under control this evening using specialist moorland firefighting equipment.

“Thanks to the incredible hard work from our firefighters this fire is now out. We will shortly be scaling down our involvement at the scene.

“Our firefighters, from Ashton, Stalybridge, Oldham, Hyde and Bolton North, used specialist moorland firefighting equipment to bring the blaze, which measured 100m squared, under control and extinguish it.”
