A fire tore through an industrial unit in Ashton yesterday evening [Tuesday 26 February].

It started at around 4:30pm at the unit on Hill Street in Ashton which houses SRL Limited, a manufacturer of shop fronts.

Five Fire Engines from Ashton, Mossley, Hyde Hollins and Oldham along with a specialist unit from Ashton and an aerial platform from Whitehill attended the scene to extinguish the blaze. At it’s height it reached a size of 100m x 30m.

Eight firefighters used breathing apparatus to tackle the fire from the ground whilst colleagues used the aerial appliance to get water on the flames from above. Two jets, one hose reel, a covering jet, one lance and ventilation fans were all needed to put out the blaze.

Nearby roads including Hill Street, Welbeck Street South and Bentinck Street were all closed whilst firefighters dealt with the scene. This caused long tailbacks throughout Ashton when combined with the rush hour traffic.

Fire investigation crews are now on the scene assessing the cause of the incident.
