A Certificate of Appreciation was presented by the Mayor of Tameside Cllr Denise Ward to Cancer Warriors founder Derrick Evans.

Charity members from the group were invited to the Mayor’s Parlour at Dukinfield Town Hall on Friday for the presentation.

While the Mayor found out about the group – and about Derrick – it was also an opportunity for members to find out a little bit more about some of Tameside’s rich heritage on display in the parlour.

The special ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ certificate follows a recent ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for Derrick, which he was presented with at the charity’s Christmas Party event.

Derrick is the founder of the Stalybridge-based charity, which he has created after battling back against stage four Lymphoma.

He was presented with the Lifetime Achievement award in recognition of his ‘dedication, commitment and determination’.

Derrick was initially diagnosed with cancer back in 2007 when he was a 30-year-old father of one and battled the disease through many years of treatment.

Initially his fundraising efforts saw the creation of ‘Derrick’s Army’ with the team raising money for the Christie.

In 2014 the ‘Army’ became the Cancer Warriors charity.

Last year marked a milestone in the charity’s journey with the opening of Cancer Warriors’ first ever permanent drop-in Information and Support Centre, based on
Melbourne Street in Stalybridge.

The charity provides support, information, therapies, private consultations and more at its centre
