Five people who targeted taxi drivers and member of the public for robbery have been sentenced.

Jack Clarke, 20, Patrick Ward, 18, Jason Chorlton, 18 and two youngsters, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were convicted of a variety of offences including robbery, business robbery and possession of a bladed article.

Patrick Ward and Jason Chorlton were sentenced to six years in prison whilst Jack Clarke was jailed for four. Both juvenile offenders received a two year Custody Detention Order.

The offences happened during February 2018, when members of the group targeted taxi drivers and the public with knives and weapons, stealing vehicles.

According to Greater Manchester Police the group would call taxi companies, luring drivers to an address, before attacking them and stealing their property.

In one incident, a driver in his 60’s was punched in the face causing him to lose two teeth. He was chased away from a car he had recently purchased and threatened with a knife to give up his keys. The group then took the car and crashed it a short time later, writing it off and affecting the victims livelihood.

In another incident the group threatened three people with knives in a parked car, which they then stole and later abandoned.

Following joint work by Tameside CCTV and Tameside Police the incidents were quickly linked, offenders identified and arrested.

Detective Constable J Lockett said: “This group were both opportunistic and premeditated in their methods, subjecting innocent members of the public to serious violence. We have worked with the community to ensure that the offenders were identified and brought to justice for their violent crimes”.
