Stalybridge Celtic bowed out of the Cheshire Senior Cup as Runcorn Linnets won 5-4 on penalties.

Celtic entered the game as favourites, although Runcorn have hit the ground running since promotion last season and are currently top of the Evo-Stik West.

The game was a fairly even affair in the first half, with the only real chance of note arriving in the fifth minute. Runcorn were awarded a free-kick in a dangerous area and hit the crossbar.

After a lively opening to the second half, Celtic were awarded a penalty in the 55th minute, which Scott Bakkor converted.

Neil Kengni had a chance to wrap the game up for Celtic in the 76th minute, but after lobbing the ‘keeper from distance, he could only watch on as the ball trickled just wide of the post.

Celtic were left to rue the missed chance as Runcorn equalised through Kurt Sherlock in the 94th minute. The game was taken to a round of penalties, which the hosts won 5-4.
