Axe-wielding thugs threaten staff at Hollingworth Post Office
Friday 11th January 2019 @ 11:23 by Lauren Entwistle

Thugs armed with an axe and a 12 inch knife raided a Tameside Post Office and threatened the owner before making off with cash and cigarettes.

The incident happened at Hollingworth Village Store on Market Street shortly after Shaz Naz opened up at 5:30am.

Shaz, 57, was sorting through the day’s papers when three men wearing dark clothing and black ski masks burst into the shop – demanding that he show them the safe before threatening him with his life.

Shaz said: “They demanded that I unlock the safe and if I didn’t, they would chop me up into bits and kill me.”

“They ended up stealing money and cigarettes before driving off… I then pressed the panic button that alerted the police. The whole incident probably took about eight minutes.”

A spokesperson for GMP said: “Shortly before 6am on Thursday 10th January, police were called to reports of a robbery at the Post Office on Market Street in Hollingworth.

“Three men – one armed with an axe and one other wielding a knife – entered the post office through the main door and threatened staff.

“They stole a large quantity of cash and cigarettes, before fleeing in the direction of Mottram Moor. Enquiries are still ongoing.”

Shaz wanted to praise police for their prompt arrival, saying that they have handled the incident commendably and did an excellent job given the limited resources they have.
