Enforcement of on-street parking charges in Ashton town centre has been temporarily suspended after complaints that signage relating to the new payment systems wasn’t clear enough.

Those that were issued with parking tickets over the weekend have also had their fines cancelled.

The council confirmed today (Monday 26 November) that they wouldn’t be enforcing the charges until signage regarding the new system was clear enough.

The new cashless payment system was introduced last week – with drivers having to use a smartphone app or call a number to pay for on-street parking.

The council say that parkers should continue to use the system as enforcement will resume as soon as the system is made clearer.

In a statement a Tameside Council spokesperson said: “Hundreds of people have successfully used the new system but we have temporarily suspended enforcement while we review the signage in the area to ensure it is clear enough for everyone. All tickets issued over the weekend have been cancelled and we are contacting people directly to inform them. The system is still in place and people should continue to use it – enforcement will be back be back up and running as soon as we are satisfied with the signage.”
