Chester 4-1 Ashton United

Ashton’s poor form continued as they slipped to their fifth successive defeat in their run of 6 consecutive away matches. Bradley Jackson was switched to right wing back as the Robins started with a 3-5-2 formation but they immediately conceded after 2 minutes as Luke Pilling miscued a clearance allowing Craig Mahon to make progress and his cross was side footed home from the 6 yard line by Anthony Dudley.

Mahon’s next delivery was just too strong for Dudley before Lewis Baines headed a cross away at full stretch and Dudley then steered Simon Grand’s delivery over the top. Liam Tomsett made a mazy run into the home penalty area but was stopped by Grand’s tackle and Iwan Murray dispossessed Scott Kay before shooting wide. Grand then should have done better than to win a corner From Howson’s header back but when the delivery arrived Howson was on hand to force it over the line.

Ashton started the second period in better fashion and Sam Sheridan sent an effort dipping over from Matty Chadwick’s lay off  before Chadwick himself found the side netting. Dudley then over elaborated from Sheridan’s misplaced pass and Sheridan made a good run from midway but steered wide of the target. Slightly against the run of play Dudley turned and volleyed home his second as a corner was headed down to him by Danny Livesey and Chadwick forced Shenton into a sharp save at his near post.

Ex-Robin Dan Mooney cut inside before skying over but his next contribution saw a cross headed home by Mahon after Ashton lost possession. Jackson’s near post effort went straight at Shenton and Aaron Chalmers glanced a header wide after Chadwick’s shot deflected out for a corner. Liam Martin should have set up Luke Ashworth but failed to square the ball and Chadwick’s cross just beat the far post and after Dudley had fired a hat-trick attempt over from Roberts’ pass Sheridan fired a rebound over from Jackson’s attempt but Jackson then pulled a goal back as his chip over Shenton went in off the bar after a neat combination with Ashworth.
