You’d be forgiven for thinking a trip to Italy would be necessary in order to listen to some of its native music, but you can find it a lot closer to home – namely Ashton-Under-Lyne.

Marcello Dongu, 32, moved from Sardinia to the UK five years ago but has always loved to sing.

He now works as a waiter at San Rocco restaurant, where manager Mark Wayne discovered Marcello’s passion for music, and has decided to incorporate his talents by featuring his singing on the last Friday evening of every month.

Mark said: “We want to give him some support. He’s got a real passion and has been practising new acoustic covers as well as traditional Italian songs, which he’ll be playing throughout the night.”

Marcello, now living in Hyde, previously attempted to break into showbiz through a TV talent competition but has since decided it wasn’t for him.

He said: “I used to sing in Italy… I did audition for the X-Factor four years ago – but it meant eight hours spent queuing around the Trafford Centre and the whole atmosphere just wasn’t for me.”

When asked if he’d try it again, Marcello added: “I’m not saying no! I’m just going to go with the flow.”

He has previously sung in aid of charity, such as Oakdale School, and also featured at Mottram show.

The set will run throughout dinner service, when San Rocco opens at six o’clock on Friday the 28th September, with Marcello accompanied by a musician playing an acoustic guitar.
