Firefighters battled a large scrap metal fire in Stalybridge last night.

The smoke plume could be seen across parts of the borough

Crews from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) were called to a fire in a builders yard on Knowl Street in Stalybridge at 9:15PM last night (Sunday August 5).

The fire involved fuel and managed to spread to a nearby vehicle but was quickly brought under control by firefighters. GMFRS confirmed that 5 pumps and a foam unit were at the scene for around 3 and a half hours.

It created a large plume of smoke that was low-lying and drifted across the town centre and Ridge Hill areas of Stalybridge. Residents were asked to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed.

The fire has now been extinguished.
