A Denton school teacher took charge of his first game in the Football League on Saturday.

Matt Donohue, who works at Greswell Primary School, refereed the League Two fixture between Colchester United and Port Vale at the Jobserve Community Stadium, which ended 2-0 to the hosts.

Although there were no red cards on the afternoon, Matt dished out four yellows and awarded 24 fouls.

He was promoted to the National List of Referees in June, following an extensive career in the non-league pyramid, and is therefore able to take charge of League One and Two fixtures this season.

Elsewhere, Ashton referee Chris Kavanagh took charge of Huddersfield Town’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

The 33-year-old gave out three yellow cards.

Chelsea stormed to victory thanks to goals from N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Pedro.
