A man has been charged with causing the death of 64-year-old taxi driver Allen Ingram.

Mr Ingram was struck by a white Vauxhall Mokka, while helping an elderly couple into his taxi on St Lawrence Road in Denton, on Tuesday afternoon.

Despite receiving medical treatment from witnesses and then paramedics, he sadly died from his injuries.

The driver of the car, which was being chased by police at the time, fled the scene but handed himself in at Cheadle Police Station yesterday.

26-year-old Daniel Sayers, of no fixed address, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and will appear at Tameside Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Chief Superintendent Neil Evans, territorial commander for Tameside, said: “Tuesday’s incident was truly distressing for everyone involved. We have specialist officers supporting Allen’s family and our thoughts will continue to be with them.

“He was an innocent man that tragically lost his life and I know that Allen’s family, together with our officers, other emergency services and the local community, have really felt the impact of this incident.

“The Independent Office of Police Conduct have launched their own investigation and we will openly provide them with every detail in support of their enquiries.”
