Man dies after being hit by car during chase through Denton

One man has died following a car chase through the streets of Denton.

At around 12:45pm today (31 July) police on patrol attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle. The car failed to stop for the officers and during a short pursuit, the car collided with a number of other cars. Sadly, a man died at the scene.

Two people, a man and a woman, were arrested by officers on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remain in custody for question. A third man fled the scene and police are appealing for anyone that witnessed to collision to come forward.

St Lawrence Road is currently closed at the junction with Stockport Road whilst enquiries are carried out.

The North West Ambulance Service confirmed that they had attended the incident between a vehicle and a pedestrian. The air ambulance was called, along with an advanced paramedic, a senior clinician, an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle.

Chief Superintendent Neil Evans, said: “We have launched an investigation into this incident as a man has very sadly lost his life and I would like to appeal to anyone who saw the collision or knows the identity or whereabouts of the man who ran from the car to contact us.

“This is a truly tragic incident and our thoughts are with this man’s family at this unimaginably difficult time

“The incident has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct in line with normal policy.

“Enquiries are ongoing at the scene and the road will remain closed while investigation work is carried out so I would urge commuters to avoid the area where possible.”
