Police officers investigating the assault of a girl in Stamford Park have arrested four people.

After a video of the attack was circulated on social media, officers from GMP’s Tameside borough launched an investigation and established that it happened near to Stamford Park boating lake on Friday, July 13th.

The victim of the attack, a 13-year-old girl, was taken to hospital with extensive bruising yesterday, Sunday July 15th, but has since been discharged to recover at home.

Four teenage girls have been arrested on suspicion of assault and have been released under investigation. While enquiries continue, officers are urging people to stop sharing the video online.

Chief Inspector Andy Harty of GMP’s Tameside Borough said: “This investigation surrounds a particularly nasty attack that happened in broad daylight, leaving a teenager with no option to defend herself so I’m sure we can all agree we want to get justice for her and her family.

“I cannot urge the importance of people refraining from sharing the video online and speculating about the identity of those in the video- it can be extremely unhelpful and could undermine the investigation.

“In the meantime, I want to thank the public for their patience as we continue with our enquiries into this awful attack and assure them we will provide updates when we can.”
