This is the flag design fluttering above Tameside Hospital today (Thursday) in celebration of 70 years of the NHS.

It was drawn by eight-year-old Eoin McGowan, who won our competition run in association with Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care Trust to design a flag fit for the landmark celebration.

The Trust had asked children under the age of 11 to design the flag and over the last three weeks we have published the three categories 4-6, 7-9 and 10-11 year olds with their 20 finalists.

Today Eoin was named as the overall winner.

His flag design has been converted into a full size flag – the prize for winning the competition – and which he will personally help to raise at Tameside Hospital today.

Head of Communications at Tameside Hospital Paul Thorpe said: “We had a wonderful response to the competition.

“Over 500 local children dedicated their time to designing flags which capture the essence of the 70th birthday.

“The judges felt that every single design was worthy of winning but Eoin’s design stood out.

“We would like to congratulate Eoin and also say a big congratulations to Erin and Joshua who came a close second and all the children who took part.”

WINNERS ALL: Judges had a tough job deciding on the winner from more than 500 entries – thanking everyone who took part and stating that they were all winners.
