Niall Maher, a former Audenshaw School pupil, has penned a two-year deal with National League outfit, FC Halifax Town.

The 22-year-old defender started his career at Bolton Wanderers, alongside fellow pupil and Nottingham Forest striker Zach Clough, before joining Bury for the 2016-17 season.

Finding game time hard to come by, Maher joined League of Ireland Premier Division side Galway United in August 2017, before moving to AFC Telford United in February 2018.

He initially joined the Shaymen in March and went on to start nine games for the club.

Maher, who also spent a brief period with Blackpool, will be gearing up for next season in what will mark Halifax’s second consecutive season in the National League North.

The club finished 16th last season.

Upon signing Maher, manager Jamie Fullarton told Halifax’s official website: “Niall was one of my first signings when I joined the club back in February and has demonstrated his quality with his contribution in every game, which I had no doubt he would. To have him commit to a 2-year contract with the club is a major boost for the club and shows a real commitment and belief from him to want to be part of what the club are striving to achieve”.
