GreaterSport’s previous Chair, Chris Brindley, was recognised for his services to sport in Greater Manchester in The Queen’s Birthday Honours List this weekend.

Throughout Chris’ ten years at GreaterSport he has overseen a huge transition within GreaterSport’s work. He has supported in;

  • Getting 1 Million people regularly active across Greater Manchester. An ambitious target which was achieved in 2017.
  • This increase in activity would have saved the area £647,590 in NHS costs in the first year alone.
  • The introduction of the Greater Manchester School Games that sees the best young sporting stars in the County take part in their own mini Olympics style event which has seen the likes of The Rizzle Kicks perform at.
  • The growth of the Greater Manchester Sports Awards which is GreaterSport’s event to recognise all the amazing volunteers, coaches, clubs and athletes across the County.
  • The introduction of an Under 5’s programme that demonstrates the importance of movement from birth. This has resulted in 49,000 new parents a year receiving information on how to be active with their new child through activities like tummy time.
  • The emergence of GM Moving, which has seen physical activity taken to a new level in GM by working with partners across the health sector.

From a local perspective, Chris’ role in developing the GM School Games has enabled local schools within the borough to go head-to-head with the very best across the region. Russell Scott, Denton, is just one school to have continuously been represented at the event, which includes a winter edition and summer edition.

In addition to Chris’ voluntary role as Chair of GreaterSport, he also has Non-Executive roles with a number of organisations; the Rugby Football League, Manchester County Football Association (MCFA), Switch the Play, Rapport and the Sport and Dance Group, which include Total Swimming, Total Gymnastics and Becky Adlington’s Swim Stars.

Chris left his role as Chair of GreaterSport at the end of March after completing the maximum term for a board member with the organisation, passing over to Mike Perls.

Chris commented: ‘Honoured and humbled in equal measure to have been awarded an MBE for services to sport in The Queen’s Birthday Honours List. My thanks to everyone who has supported me in my journey.’

Sara Tomkins, CEO at GreaterSport commented: ‘I was thrilled to see Chris announced in the Queen’s birthday list and be recognised for all the work he has done throughout sport in this County. The work he did for GreaterSport was incredible and he has left us in a very exciting position for the future.”

Chris was in good company in the list and GreaterSport would like to say a huge congratulations to John Rouse (Chief Officer at GMHSCP) who was awarded a CBE for services to Health & Social Care and Diane Modahl (Founder of Diane Modahl Sports Foundation) for services to sport and to young people in North West England.

The Queen’s Birthday Honours List recognises the achievements of a wide range of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom.
