A man who was arrested on suspicion of murder, following an assault in Dukinfield, has been released without charge.

Just after 1am on Friday April 20th, police were called to West Street to reports of fighting.

A 34-year-old man, later named as Adam Harris from Dukinfield, and a 33-year-old woman were arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault.

Both were taken into custody at Ashton police station, where Adam fell ill. He was taken to hospital and sadly died.

Further enquiries after Adam’s death established that a second man was involved in the fight on West Street and 32-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder. Now, both the man and the 33-year-old woman have been released, with no further action.

A Home Office post mortem has been carried out and extensive tests are ongoing, but early indications suggest that Adam had not sustained any injuries that were likely to have contributed to his death.

GMP’s professional standards branch, as is routine in such circumstances, have referred the incident to the IOPC who are undertaking an independent investigation into the circumstances.

Detective Chief Inspector, Lewis Hughes, of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “We are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Adam’s death and are appealing for anyone with any information to contact police as soon as possible.

“I would urge anyone who witnessed the earlier altercation, or has any information that could assist our investigation, to please get in touch as a matter of urgency.”

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 8568797 quoting reference number 113 of 20/04/2018 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
